A Mom Moment: The day my son met Sarah Palin

By: Scott Phillips

On Saturday, October 30th I attended a campaign rally in Charleston, WV, for Republican candidate John Raese. My 9 year old son Ethan wanted to tag along with me. He’s taken a real interest in politics due to the recent election. I’ve had the opportunity to explain to him our electoral process and the great privilege we have as Americans to exercise our right to vote.

Earlier that day Ethan got an opportunity to go door to door with me and pass out campaign literature for two local candidates. It was his first venture into the political process. He loved it.

He was most excited when he got the opportunity to hear Governor Sarah Palin speak at the Raese rally. Following the speech Governor Palin was mobbed by hundreds of eager people pressing for autographs and pictures. I pulled Ethan out of the crowd to keep him from being crushed. We repositioned ourselves in hope of catching a glimpse of Palin’s departure.

I managed to ask Governor Palin, as she was walking by, if I might be able to take a picture of her with my son. She politely agreed. Following the picture, Governor Palin gave Ethan what I can describe only as a “Mom Moment”. She asked him what his name was. She asked him his age. She knew by his age that he was in the 4th grade. She asked him what he had been for Halloween. Just as she turned to leave, she tenderly patted Ethan on the head and told him it was nice to meet him. His smile said it all.

I know this all transpired in less than a minute but it felt longer. It was as if time stood still briefly. In an age where our politicians and candidates are hurried and rushed by their schedules it was refreshing to see Governor Palin stop and show interest in a 9 year old boy.

A lady standing behind me who watched all this transpire said afterward to me, “He’ll always remember that for the rest of his life.” I agree.
