Unhappy Dems Say Tax Cut Bill Likely to Pass

Slowly, painfully and reluctantly, congressional Democrats are slogging their way toward acceptance of President Barack Obama's tax cut compromise, which would let rich and poor Americans keep Bush-era tax cuts that were scheduled to expire this month. After Obama publicly defended the plan for a third day Wednesday, and Vice President Joe Biden met with Democratic lawmakers in the Capitol for a second day, several Democrats predicted the measure will pass, mainly because of extensive Republican support.

Inertial Security: A Retirement Plan for Unemployed Americans

Now, on another subject, why aren't we creating a retirement program for the unemployed? Don't they need pensions for all the years they've not worked so they can go to Florida and not work? I mean, we have pensions... Like Tim Pawlenty. He had a bus strike. They wanted full health care and pensions after working for 15 years. We've been told that the unemployed receiving benefits are an economic stimulus and that not paying these people not to work would cost us 600,000 jobs, or some number. Well, why...? Why even contemplate the notion of having them go back to work, then?

The Tax Deal Could Fall Apart

"Liberal Democrats Trying to Prevent a House Vote on the Tax Deal," says Fox News. PMSNBC says liberals are getting angrier and angrier and may vote to scuttle the whole deal, that they don't like using jobless benefits as a bargaining chip. It simply isn't right. There's some lib Democrat on MSNBC right now saying that. It's a bargaining chip. "Using unemployment benefits and extension as a bargaining chip for tax cuts for the rich, why, that just can't..." Opposition is said to be mounting. The White House has today e-mailed reporters that the following Democrats support the deal: "Sen. Jim Webb, Rep. Gary Peters, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, and Charlotte, NC, Mayor Anthony Foxx." Five Democrats support the deal, and Obama has e-mailed their names to the media.

Who's Being Held Hostage Here?

Obama said that he didn't want to negotiate with Republican hostage takers, but he had to. Remember, this is the same guy who's still bending over backwards to negotiate with Iran and North Korea, and he has no problem negotiating with them. But the Republicans are hostage takers. And that mantra has been picked up. We have a montage of this, and, you know, if a talk show host says Imam Obama, or makes a joke about Driving Miss Nancy, it becomes national news; it's horrible; it's insensitive; it's rotten. Well, where's the outrage over this? All these Democrats, elected and media types, referring to Republicans as terrorist hostage takers.

Obama's Operation Wet Diaper

Operation Wet Diaper. That's what the Obama press conference was yesterday, ladies and gentlemen. In fact, Operation Wet Diaper is what the entire Democrat Party is going through. It's amazing to watch all this. You know, I'm not all that convinced that the deal is gonna hold up. It could fall apart over something as innocuous as the death tax. It could fall apart over that just as easily as it could fall apart over the extension of tax cuts for the rich, and if it falls apart, Obama will be happy. Make no mistake. He would love to be able to blame this falling apart on Republicans. He would love to be able to blame the fact that there is going to be a tax increase on the middle-class on Republicans. He would love to do so. Obama's an ideologue. He doesn't care about the middle-class. He doesn't care about any class. He cares about himself.

House Passes DREAM Act Immigration Measures

The House of Representatives approved a bill that would grant thousands of young, illegal immigrants the chance to become American citizens Wednesday night. Called the DREAM Act, the proposal would permit young people brought illegally into the U.S. by their parents the opportunity for citizenship. However, that's contingent on them completing two years of college or military service. The vote was 216 to 198. The White House lobbied hard for the bill's passage, lauding it as a step towards a comprehensive reform of the nation's immigration laws. Supporters say the measure would strengthen the U.S. economy and boost military readiness. Critics contend that the legislation offers what they call "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.

Unions That Fought for Health Law Get a Pass

The Obama administration has allowed 222 employers, insurers and unions to opt out of a key mandate in the new health care law – a number that has grown exponentially in the past two months. Employers like McDonald's, Waffle House and Universal Orlando are among the companies that have received a one-year waiver, allowing them to maintain minimal coverage below the new law's standards. The list has grown significantly since October, when 30 companies had waivers, and has doubled since early November. Taken together, the companies cover more than 1.5 million people, including 34 unions with more than 140,000 members.
