So Who's Holding the Unemployed Hostage Now?

With Democrats threatening to block the Obama/Republican compromise on Bush-era tax cuts, does that mean they're the ones now holding the unemployed hostage until they get their way? That was, after all, the charge Democrats and others had often lodged against Republicans.

Gorbachev on WikiLeaks: Fire Diplomats

In an exclusive Newsmax interview, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says the U.S. officials who claim Russian democracy has all but disappeared should be fired and “replaced by normal people.” Gorbachev acknowledged, however, that occasionally “there is backsliding” in his country’s ongoing effort to develop democratic institutions.

Two Black Democrat Officials Bolt for the GOP

Two African-American Democrats on Thursday announced that they were joining the Republican Party. Hall County Commissioner Ashley Bell and former state executive committee member Andre Walker said the Democratic Party had grown too liberal and they are finding a new home with the Republicans. The state GOP touted Bell as the first black elected official in modern times in Georgia to leave the Democrats for the GOP. But that distinction belongs to former state Sen. Roy Allen of Savannah, who joined the Republican Party in 1994.

GOP Might Pass Own Version of DREAM Act Next Year

Outgoing Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) said Friday he's privately discussed the prospect that Republicans would pursue their own version of the DREAM Act next year. Bennett said he would vote for the immigration legislation, which gives immigrants who were illegally brought to the U.S. as children a conditional pathway to citizenship, if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) brought it to the floor under the right conditions.

Cancun Sees Record Cold Temperatures for U.N. Global Warming Conference

The irony: As negotiators from nearly 200 countries met in Cancun to strategize ways to keep the planet from getting hotter, the temperature in the seaside Mexican city plunged to a 100-year record low of 54° F. Climate-change skeptics are gleefully calling Cancun's weather the latest example of the "Gore Effect" — a plunge in temperature they say occurs wherever former Vice President Al Gore, now a Nobel Prize-winning environmental activist, makes a speech about the climate. Although Gore is not scheduled to speak in Cancun, "it could be that the Gore Effect has announced his secret arrival," jokes former NASA scientist Roy W. Spencer.

Media Mostly Ignore Democrat Saying 'F--k the President'

As NewsBusters previously reported, the three broadcast networks completely ignored the revelation that an unknown Democrat said "F--k the President" during a heated meeting of the House Democratic caucus Thursday. A further examination has identified that despite corroboration by other sources, practically no American media outlets reported the news.

Dem. Calls for Christmas Crisis to Force GOP On Tax Debate

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Mn) appeared on Minnesota Public Radio and revealed a startling strategy the left might employee to force House Republicans to raise taxes. Earlier this week, President Obama likened Republicans to "hostage takers" with the American people as the hostage.

Bill Clinton Rides to Obama Rescue

In a rare return to the White House, Bill Clinton on Friday urged unhappy Democrats to unite behind President Barack Obama's embattled plan to avert a massive New Year's tax hike. "I personally believe this is a good deal, and the best he could have gotten under the circumstances," the former president said as he and Obama paid a surprise visit to the White House briefing room after private talks. Obama praised his guest – "he presided over as good an economy as we've seen in our lifetimes" – but quickly excused himself to go join his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, at a holiday party.

Close the Education Department!

This week’s release of the latest international education test comparisons makes me wonder why there aren’t more calls to kill off the U.S. Department of Education. Eight years ago, Bush signed the “No Child Left Behind Act,” which costs the government $25 billion a year. He promised that this would fix the K-12 education problem: “We've spent billions of dollars with lousy results. So now it's time to spend billions of dollars and get good results.” But of course, his central planning did not bring the good results. The US spends more than $100,000 on a kids’ entire K-12 education.

Judge Dismisses Part of Challenge to Arizona Law

A federal judge has dismissed parts of the U.S. Department of Justice's challenge to Arizona's new immigration law. U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton's ruling on Friday struck down the federal government's challenge to the portion of the law that prohibits the transport of illegal immigrants. But Bolton's ruling didn't have any effect on the portions of the law that she previously prevented from taking effect, including a requirement that immigrants get or carry immigration registration papers.
