EU: Fiscal union or bust?

EU nations are under intense pressure to create a 'fiscal union' or face collapse. This is exactly the reason we are facing the problems of today: because the government always thinks going bigger is better. In fact, the exact opposite needs to happen. Glenn explains on radio today why the EU's latest plan is destined for failure.

US To Bailout EU

The United States would be ready to support the extension of the European Financial Stability Facility via an extra commitment of money from the International Monetary Fund, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday. "There are a lot of people talking about that. I think the European Commission has talked about that," said the U.S. official, commenting on enlarging the 750 billion euro ($980 billion) EU/IMF European stability fund. "It is up to the Europeans. We will certainly support using the IMF in these circumstances." "There are obviously some severe market problems," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "In May, it was Greece. This is Ireland and Portugal. If there is contagion that's a huge problem for the global economy."

Supreme Court questions Obama admin's broad use of FOIA exemption

The Supreme Court is questioning the government's broad use of an exemption in the federal Freedom of Information Act to withhold documents from the public. The justices heard argument Wednesday in an appeal from Glen Milner, a Washington state resident who sued under FOIA for maps showing the extent of damage expected from an explosion at the Navy's main West Coast ammunition dump on an island near Port Townsend in western Washington. The Obama administration is defending the decision to deny Milner the maps under a provision of FOIA that exempts from disclosure documents "related solely to the internal personnel rules and practices of an agency."

Senate Republicans Vow to Block Dem Legislation Until Tax Cuts, Budget Pass

Every Senate Republican has signed onto a letter vowing to block all Democratic-backed legislation until the chamber extends the Bush tax cuts and approves a spending bill to keep the government running, Fox News has learned. Throwing down the gauntlet, all 42 members of the GOP caucus are sending the letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warning him that they will bring matters to a standstill unless he swiftly brings those tax-and-spending issues to the floor.

Hope IN God, FOR Our Generation

But how, in the face of all these overwhelming facts of social and economic breakdown, can you be so optimistic for our generation? How can you be so confident in turning the tide in the face of today’s corrupt politics, rising influence of liberal media, scores of Americans dumbed down by public schools and TV, and more and more government control?

Video: Gesture to God Earns High School Running Back ‘Unsportsmanlike Conduct’ Penalty

It was a state semi-final game and there was a lot riding on 23-yard touchdown run by Tumwater High School’s running back Ronnie Hastie. After he crossed into the end zone for his second quarter score, Hastie took a knee and briefly pointed to heaven above, thanking God. It was this action which drew the attention of one referee and, subsequently, the referee’s yellow flag. Hastie was surprised to learn that his momentary pause for prayer would earn him a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

WikiLeaks website blocked behind Chinese firewall

China, one of the biggest Internet policers, took no chances with the latest online sensation and blocked the WikiLeaks website Wednesday amid potentially embarrassing claims made in leaked U.S. diplomatic memos posted there. Attempts to access wikileaks.org and cablegate.wikileaks.org were met with a notice saying the connection had been reset, or were diverted the user to popular Chinese search engine Baidu. That's the standard response when the connection to an overseas-based website has been cut. The U.S. Embassy memos - called cables, though they are mostly encrypted electronic communication - contain some frank talk about and attributed to Chinese figures and their North Korean allies. In one, a Chinese diplomat is quoted describing North Korea as a "spoiled child" for attempting to win U.S. attention with a provocative missile test.

Democrat abandons Obama on gate rape

A Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives is now urging Congress to freeze funding for the controversial nude-image scanners being installed in airports around the nation by the Transportation Security Administration. U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, D-N.J., a Ph.D. physicist and current chair of the House Select Oversight Panel, also has written to ask for a meeting with TSA Administrator John Pistole to discuss his concerns regarding TSA's implementation of X-ray backscatter full-body scanning machines at airports throughout the nation.

Obama's IRS accused of targeting Jews

An attorney for an educational organization called Z Street says there's now evidence Internal Revenue Service agents under the direction of the Obama administration intentionally are targeting the free speech and religious rights of American Jews. WND reported only weeks ago when the IRS delayed approval of a tax-exempt status for a private organization and was reviewing its educational work after explaining it must be examined by Washington because its activities may "contradict the administration's public policies." That allegation was contained in a federal lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by Z Street, a Merion Station, Pa., group that educates on the statehood and status of Israel.

The Cost of Rejecting an Earmark Ban

Republican Sens. Bob Bennett (UT), Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME), Jim Inhofe (OK), Dick Lugar (IN), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Richard Shelby (AL), and George Voinovich (OH) all just voted against an amendment in the Senate that would have banned Congressional earmarks. This is terrible public policy for their states, for their constituents, and for our country. Harvard research shows that states that experience an increase in earmark spending suffer from decreases in corporate capital expenditures and employment. Earmarking also robs money from local government transportation priorities to pay for Senator’s vanity projects. And there is a strong correlation between high numbers of earmarks high total spending by Congress.
