Tales of the Bizarre: Obama Bails on Press Conference

Since Barack Obama became president, we have witnessed what happens when someone is elected to a job but is clearly not ready for that job. I'm not simply talking about a man who crumbles when his teleprompter goes on the fritz. It's so much more than that. Obama has bashed his own country in an effort to gain favor with other nations. That didn't work. He rammed through left-wing policies without building (or at least trying to build) a consensus. November gave us an indication of how well that went over. And now, the journey of Barack Obama is complete... completely clueless, that is. On Friday, Obama not only brought in former President Bill Clinton to explain the new tax deal, but then he left his own press conference! I guess he felt he was turning things over to the one person who knew what was going on.

NKorea threatens SKorea with nuclear war

North Korea warned Monday that U.S.-South Korean cooperation could bring a nuclear war to the region, as the South began artillery drills amid lingering tension nearly three weeks after the North's deadly shelling of a South Korean island. The South's naval live-fire drills are scheduled to run Monday through Friday at 27 sites. The regularly scheduled exercises are getting special attention following a North Korean artillery attack on front-line Yeonpyeong Island that killed two South Korean marines and two civilians.

Arrests in Afghan attack that killed 6 US troops

Several suspects have been arrested after a suicide attack killed six American troops when an explosives-packed minibus blew up at the entrance of a joint NATO-Afghan base in southern Afghanistan, officials said Monday. The blast on Sunday was the deadliest attack on coalition troops this month. NATO spokesman Brig. Gen. Josef Blotz said Monday that several arrests were made Sunday night. "Individuals believed to be involved in yesterday's attack have been arrested by Afghan and coalition forces," Blotz said at a news conference, adding that no shots were fired as the suspects were taken into custody. NATO has declined to identify the victims' nationalities. But an Afghan army official in southern Afghanistan said on Monday that the six were Americans. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about NATO casualties.

Senate Gets First Crack at Obama-GOP Tax Deal

Senators get their first chance Monday to vote on the tax-cut deal struck by President Obama and Republicans, but whatever the outcome of the test vote, the White House expects the bill to pass by year's end. "Everybody understands what it would mean for the economy if we don't get this done," Obama adviser David Axelrod said Sunday. The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin of Illinois, said a "good cross-section" of senators in his party are ready to accept the deal.

Obama: Tax cut deal not perfect, but worth passage

President Barack Obama calls his tax-cut agreement with Republicans far from perfect but a good deal overall for Americans, while acknowledging that many fellow Democrats aren't happy about what he negotiated with the GOP. Pressing for passage by year's end, he told lawmakers in his radio and Internet address Saturday that "our recovery will be strengthened or weakened based on the choice that now rests with Congress." The deal would extend for all earners cuts in income tax rates that are set to expire next month. It would renew jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and trim Social Security taxes for one year. Republicans support the plan because it would not impose higher taxes on the wealthiest, as Obama long had wanted to do. Democrats object to the pact on grounds that it is too generous to the rich.

President praying for Holbrooke's recovery

President Barack Obama calls critically ill diplomat Richard Holbrooke "a towering figure in American foreign policy" and says he is praying for his recovery. Holbrooke, the president's special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, is at a Washington hospital after undergoing surgery Saturday on a torn aorta. Obama in a statement Saturday night said he had spoken with Holbrooke's wife and told her that he and First Lady Michelle Obama are praying for him. Obama called Holbrooke a critical member of the administration's Afghanistan and Pakistan team, and "a tireless public servant." Holbrooke's family has been with the diplomat. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also has visited at the George Washington University Hospital.

U.S. flight crew held by foreign authorities for 'insulting' Chavez

The Venezuelan government once detained an American Airlines pilot and crew on suspicion that one of the crew members "insulted" Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez by calling him crazy, according to a U.S. diplomatic cable posted today by WikiLeaks and reviewed by WND. The cable revealed that on Sept. 30, 2008, the U.S. embassy in Caracas received word the American Airlines crew had been detained, apparently after a friend of a Venezuelan politician believed he heard a crew member insult Chavez. As of 2006, it became a crime in Venezuela to insult the country's president. The cable related that a passenger who had been on American Airlines flight 903 to Caracas claimed he overheard a crew member announce the current local time as "loco Chavez time." "Loco "in Spanish means "crazy."

Mysterious missile launch baffles even eyewitnesses

It's been a month since a mysterious contrail that gave the appearance of being generated by a missile launch was spotted off the coast of California, and the U.S. government simply told its citizens there was no danger. Since then, officials steadfastly have refused to elaborate on that first response, even though it later was revealed that a U.S. agency had warned the nation might be launching missiles in that area at that time. But even eyewitnesses are unable to provide a definite agreement on exactly what generated the sky-high image of a trail of exhaust that some adamantly believe was from a missile; while others conjecture was produced by a passing jetliner.

Iraqi Christians plot course for self-determination

Christians in Iraq, who trace their faith to the biblically recorded Pentecost and who have refused to be dislodged in the face of Islamic attacks and Mongol hordes over the centuries, are hammering out a course for future worship, and it includes a plan for a Christian province. Delegates from Iraq's 16 predominantly Christian political parties and groups have hammered out an agreement to form the province on the Nineveh plains in Northern Iraq. Delegates gathered in the Kurdish provincial capital city of Erbil and unanimously voted to petition the Iraqi government to approve the request for a self-governing Christian territory in the land Iraqi Christians say was the first predominantly Christian nation.

Social Security Advocates Fear Payroll Tax Cut

President Obama's plan to cut payroll taxes for a year would provide big savings for many workers but makes Social Security advocates nervous that it could jeopardize the retirement program's finances. The plan is part of a package of tax cuts and extended unemployment benefits that Obama negotiated with Senate Republican leaders. It would cut workers' share of Social Security taxes by nearly one-third for 2011. Workers making $50,000 in wages would get a $1,000 tax cut; those making $100,000 would get a $2,000 tax cut.
